Our story

Oude Werf is the oldest hotel in South Africa, on the site of its first church, built in 1687 and destroyed by fire in 1710. On this ‘old churchyard’ would rise the Cape Dutch-style Wium’s Inn, the two-storey Arcadia and, in the 20th Century, after much rebuilding, Oude Werf Hotel, today owned by the Petousis family and run by its 65-strong team. Since 1802 it has welcomed guests from statesmen and artists to explorers, the university’s first female graduates and even the odd ghost.

Living Green

Oude Werf’s ‘Living Green’ ethos applies environmental, sustainability and resource-saving practices throughout the Hotel. We recycle a most of our waste, generate solar thermal power and use energy and water-wise devices. We actively source producers of local, eco-safe and ethically produced goods and we are members of key environmental initiatives. Our Kids of the Cape

We’re known for our warmth, hospitality and personal care. This extends beyond our hotel to many less advantaged Cape and Winelands communities. Here, our Kids of the Cape Fund assists a variety of upliftment projects that provide child/youth refuge and care, education, skills-training, feeding and care of the disabled. Run by elected hotel volunteers, the Fund also receives vital contributions from our guests.
